LO Materials Engineer level 3

Job ID: 562450BR Date posted: Jul. 28, 2021 Locations: Palmdale, CaliforniaProgram: F35 Description:F-35 Low Observable Materials and Process position to provide production line and field non-conformance disposition coordination for LO Material Systems as part of the F-35 Signature Integration Team, specifically as part of the Control Surfaces and Edges group. Execute affordability and other improvement program plans related to LO materials. Support creation of LO material development plans, material test/qualification matrices, material and application specifications, composite repair techniques for F35 control surfaces and edges. In this capacity the candidate will work part time in a lab environment developing repair processes, document the processes, and provide status verbally and in writing.
Perform lab evaluations and or interface with lab personnel. Provide LO Materials and Processes support to Signature Integration, Supportable LO, Manufacturing, Production Operations, Test Engineers, ESH, Supply Chain Management, Sustainment organizations as required. Integrate and coordinate with Suppliers developing and/or providing material systems or material solutions.
This is a career level position and the candidate will work independently and collaboratively with F35 M&P engineers to provide support to all customer to include: A) Designers, providing input on material and process specifications and review design changes, B) Signature Integration, how composite and LO material design and repair details impact LO signature, C) Quality and Production organizations in interpreting acceptance criteria and approving repair dispositions, and D) Sustainment organizations for depot activities.

US and International travel likely.

Must be a US citizen or able to work in the U.S. This position is located at a facility that requires special access.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, System Engineering or other related technical field.
Desired Skills:
• Experience working with composite materials, processes, fabrication/manufacturing methods, test, and inspection processes.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Familiarity with military specifications and interpreting engineering requirements.
• Experience using hand tools (orbital sander, micrometer, hardness testing).
• Familiarity with one or more of the following techniques: composite surface preparation and bonding, wet lay-up repair, composite lay-up techniques and bagging materials, mixing and application of adhesives and sealants, interpreting NDI (non-destructive inspection) data, interpreting mechanical test data (lap shear, flatwise tensile, etc.), autoclave cure cycle evaluation, organic coating evaluation such as thickness or adhesion testing.
• Familiarity with Environmental, Safety and Health requirements. Knowledge of SDS (Safety Data Sheets).
• Familiarity with QADS (Quality Assurance Documentation System) and SFM (Shop Floor Manager).
• Specification, engineering test plan, or other technical writing experience.
Low Observables Materials familiarity desired.
• Experience with using or executing material evaluations with modern lab evaluation hardware including but not limited to: DSC, DMA, various forms of Spectroscopy, environmental/physical/mechanical test equipment.
