We are looking for a Planetary Scientist who will work with our team to shape new planetary missions as we collaborate with Principal Investigators from universities and government laboratories. In addition, this is an opportunity to help grow our Planetary Science program within the Space Science and Instrumentation (SS&I) directorate at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC). The successful candidate will be located in Littleton, CO.
The Deep Space Exploration (DSE) directorate of Commercial Civil Space has a long history of providing spacecraft and hardware solutions for many planetary missions, including every NASA mission to Mars thus far. The ATC is the research lab for LM Space and the SS&I directorate within the ATC pursues fundamental space science research and the development of prototype flight instruments and payloads. The successful candidate will play a key technical and leadership role in Planetary Science as part of these teams.

Some of the responsibilities will include:
• Collaborate with systems engineers, sub-system specialists, instrument providers, and other scientists to develop compelling deep-space missions that achieve NASA’s strategic goals and expand the opportunity for exploration to other organizations
• Maintain active research career and recognition as a respected member of the scientific community
• Interface and engage with science community to understand current state-of-the art science questions that drive winning missions
• Maintain and develop collaborations within LM that strengthen internal capabilities and awareness of the DSE and SS&I business opportunities and the value to LM
• Participate in the development of space-based instrumentation for Planetary Science.

You will be expected to craft key partnerships with R&D customers, as well as with other leaders and technologists within LM Space. You are a leader or emerging leader in the Planetary Science technical professional community, with a strong record of publications, academic interfaces, and professional contacts. You may perform as a Co-Investigator on NASA science contracts and missions.

We are seeking a colleague with demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills. You excel in an environment where you can balance self-directed tasks and working within a group. You should be willing to spend the majority of your time on mission development

You would typically have a PhD and 0 - 3 years of professional experience, a Masters and 3 - 8 years, or a Bachelors and 5 - 10 years.

There will be some domestic and international travel for this role.

Basic Qualifications:
• PhD in planetary science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Peer-reviewed publications in planetary science related journals
• Data processing and interpretation experience
Desired Skills:
• PhD completed by hire date and/or 1-3 years post-doctorate experience
• Experience writing successful proposals
• Science expertise in geochemistry or astrobiology
• Experience working in fast paced environment
• Hardware experience, which could be in a variety of forms including Development or test; Calibration; Lab work; or Data processing
• US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance
