Description:Lockheed Martin Energy is pioneering long-duration energy storage systems, based on proprietary chemistry, to enable the widespread adoption of renewable power generation, and enhance the resilience of the electric grid. We seek a well-qualified engineering manager to help commercialize these revolutionary products.
In this exciting role the Engineering Manager will have functional leadership responsibilities for electrical engineering, controls engineering, and software / firmware engineering personnel and will have design responsibility for overall architecture of electrical engineering, hardware design or selection, controls, and firmware elements of our key products.
The manager will have a refined sense of manufacturability and supportability.
The manager will drive solutions which meet our performance and cost targets concurrently as our products continue to evolve.
As a key member of our technical leadership team, the engineering manager will routinely have opportunities to contribute to the development of technology and business strategies and product roadmaps.
The manager will the opportunity to drive / contribute to full product life-cycle product development from requirements analysis through architecture definition, concept development, detailed design, and market introduction.
The manager will have the opportunity to attend industry conferences and keep up-to-date on the latest bleeding edge technological advancements and industry best practices in our domain.
The manager will have the opportunity to engage with key customers, suppliers, academics, and industry consortia to build and foster awareness and advocacy for Lockheed Martin Energy.
Recruiting team members and mentoring and coaching of existing staff will be a important and rewarding part of the role.
The ideal candidate will have significant product development experience. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished technical contributor in areas of electrical engineering design, control systems design, and / or firmware design. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated technical leadership skills and experience leading design projects.

The Locale: Cambridge, Massachusetts and the surrounding communities offer an exciting and vibrant place to work and to live. Cambridge is just across the river from Boston and is located in eastern Massachusetts. Cambridge is home to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. Cambridge is also the birthplace of many startup companies due to the high amount of brain power produced by these schools and also from nearby Tufts University, Boston College, Boston University, Brandies University, Wellesley College, Babson College, and Northeastern University. Nearby communities would include scenic coastal towns such as Swampscott, Salem, and Marblehead. To the west are communities such as Belmont, Brookline, Watertown, Waltham, Lincoln, and Concord. Our Lockheed Martin AES site is located somewhat close to the Alewife Station which is a major MBTA transit hub with access to the Red Line with service to Boston and bus lines with service to surrounding neighborhoods and adjacent communities. If you like living in right in the city, or out in the suburbs, or near the ocean, our location will offer ample choices for you. Where can you get to from Cambridge and Boston? Cape Cod is less than 90 minutes to the southeast. The White Mountains of New Hampshire are 2.5 hours to the north. Providence, RI is about 2 hours to the southwest. Montreal is about 5 hours to the northwest.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science degree in engineering or science is required.
- Experience with electrical engineering design is required.
- Demonstrated product development experience is required.
- The ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels is required.
- Team leadership experience and a genuine commitment to staff development through coaching, mentoring, and identification of growth opportunities is required.
Desired Skills:
- An advanced technical degree is preferred.
- A background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Electromechanical Engineering is desired.
- Experience with control systems design is desired.
- Experience leading teams of electrical engineers and firmware engineers would be a plus.
- Experience working on integrated product teams is desired.
- 10+ years of product development experience is preferred.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of grid-tied energy storage systems, batteries, and other electrochemical energy conversion devices, although candidates with relevant hardware and software experience outside of this area are also sought.
- As product and life-cycle cost are key determinants of market acceptability, experience in designing new products to achieve aggressive targets for first cost and operation and maintenance (O&M) is highly desirable.
