Composite Materials Engineer

Description:A multi-disciplined position requiring the application of fundamental and advanced technical principles to complex materials and process issues, drawing from the areas of surface science, adhesion, adhesives, chemistry, coatings, composites, contemporary instrument analysis techniques, engineering, finishing, physics, polymers, fibers, metals, ceramics, and other areas of materials science. Assists research and product engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement and facility engineering in matters related to chemistry and materials engineering. Evaluates technical and economic factors, recommending engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of process or product by applying knowledge of chemistry, materials engineering and related technologies. Plans, conducts and implements laboratory operations in developing new materials and fabrication procedures to fulfill production and performance requirements. Confers with materials suppliers during investigations and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications.

Additional assignments will include: reviewing Government, Military, Industry, and internal specifications to assess impact; creating and revising internal material and process specifications; creating the Parts, Materials, and Processes (PMP) database for part and material commodities and process specifications called out on program engineering drawings. Participating in Corrosion Prevention Advisory Teams (CPAT) and the Hazardous Material Management Program Teams.
Basic Qualifications:
Materials Engineering Degree with 5+ professional experience.

Knowledge of environmental and operational requirements for materials in launcher applications (for example, flammability, dissimilar metals, stress corrosion, etc.).

Material Selection of Metals, Polymers, Coatings, Adhesives, Composites, Corrosion Prevention

Experience reviewing engineering drawings and providing guidance to design, stress, and manufacturing engineers.

Defect and failure analysis disposition experience.

Previous experience working on military, aerospace vehicles or hardware.

Experience communicating with internal and external customers on a regular basis.

Strong writing, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.

Self-starter who can develop solutions to technical issues with only general direction.
Desired Skills:
Laboratory Skills: Mechanical Testing (Instron), Thermal Testing (DMA, DSC, TMA, TGA, conductivity), Microscopy (SEM, LOM, AFM), Spectroscopy (EDS, WDS, Raman, FTIR)
