PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES
Our commitment in action.
At Lockheed Martin, we are always looking to deepen and widen our diversity mission through a wide range of programs and initiatives. Perhaps most compelling is the ongoing application of our Diversity Maturity Model (DMM).
The Diversity Maturity Model (DMM).
This corporate model tracks our progress in building a more inclusive environment. It measures employee perceptions, business processes and our organizational climate. Through the DMM, we have a common language, cohesive approach and uniform process to establish a roadmap for progressing as an inclusive enterprise.
The Diversity Maturity Model (DMM) is a living and breathing initiative. It is always improving and growing. For instance, we are seeing continued progress in our DMM assessment and eLife Employee Survey results in the areas of diversity and inclusion. We are also strengthening our approach to career development, mentoring, recruiting and retention and community outreach. And we have introduced Full Spectrum Leadership to assure that our leaders deliver on business results and the kind of behaviors that inspire our employees to do their best.
Programs & Activities:
Diversity Dialogues.
These are designed to open the lines of communication by encouraging employee groups to discuss practical ways to make our environment the most inclusive for everyone.
Executive Diversity Council.
Our Executive Diversity Council is led by our Chairman, President and CEO. The council's purpose is to assure the continued visibility and priority of diversity as a business imperative, and to provide advice and guidance to our executive leadership on broad matters of policy and enterprise-wide recommendations. In formulating a diversity and inclusion strategy, we recognize that an inclusive environment must be embedded in our business objectives at all levels. All business areas in our corporation are held accountable to "own" diversity and inclusion as business objectives and to support business unit diversity councils in reaching our vision as a company and as an employer-of-choice.
Some accomplishments of our Executive Diversity Council to date:
- Created a definition for what diversity means for Lockheed Martin Corporation
- Developed the DMM
- Improved leadership's understanding of the business case for diversity via management training
- Modified language for non-discrimination policies to include sexual orientation
- Fostered the establishment of more than 30 local diversity councils
Local Diversity Councils.
Some 34 business unit Diversity Councils have formed to date. Each council identifies its own charter to support business unit objectives while aligning itself with our overall corporate diversity vision. The councils report to the senior management of their respective locations. They sponsor programs and activities for the employee population to promote an inclusive environment. They also invite speakers from the community, coordinate cultural heritage events and engage management in meaningful dialogue about inclusion.
Diversity Training.
In order to have an inclusive environment, everyone has to understand the powerful and full meaning of inclusion. Our managers play a key role in creating this awareness. All our managers complete diversity awareness training that provides them with the tools to build the most inclusive environment possible for our employees. They participate in exercises to practice managing employees from all different backgrounds, and receive tools and materials to engage in discussions with their teams.
New Employee Orientation.
The first part of feeling included is feeling welcome. And, to help you feel that way from the very start, we have improved our process for New Employee Orientation. The orientation will be used at all business locations to welcome new employees and inform them of what to expect in their first few weeks, months and first year with us. It also provides supportive resources to help employees navigate through their initial experiences on the job.
Lockheed Martin is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
