This often includes adapting machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions or designing the arrangement of machines within plant facilities. It may also include designing the sequence of operations and specifying procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that impact product performance.

• Quality Assurance Engineers/Analysts — may develop, modify, apply and maintain quality standards and protocols for processing materials into partially finished or finished materials product. This entails collaboration with engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure quality standards are in place. Specialization may occur in the areas of design, incoming material, production control, product evaluation and reliability, inventory control and/or research and development as they apply to product or process quality.

• Engineering Planners — may prepare and coordinate the plans and schedules for new or existing programs. This typically involves determining, monitoring and reviewing costs, operational budgets and schedules and manpower requirements. They may also analyze the effects of projects upon various areas such as engineering, facilities and the labor pool to determine the most practical and cost-efficient methods to obtain the required resources.

• Production Planners — may plan, prepare, issue and control production schedules and material requirements to ensure a controlled flow of approved materials timed to meet production requirements.

• Logistics Engineers/Analysts — often support a variety of logistics functions such as planning, procurement, emergency purchases and quality assurance initiatives. They may also ensure materials are available on-site to support production schedules as well as analyze requirements from internal and external customers, identify sources of supply and initiate procurement action. In addition, they may independently analyze requirements for materials, using price, delivery and other factors in order to determine the best value for customers.

• Industrial Engineers — typically analyze and design a sequence of operations and/or work flow in order to improve efficiencies within plant and production facilities. They also perform equipment layouts as well as determine the most efficient sequence and methods for maximum utilization of production facilities and personnel.
